KENYA REGISTERED CLINICAL MEDICINE AND SURGERY (KCMS)
Clinical Officers are the first line healthcare workers providing preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative healthcare services at all levels of the Kenyan healthcare service delivery system to the public, under the Clinical Officers Act No. 20 of 2017 of the laws of Kenya. They are responsible for taking history, examining, investigating, diagnosing, and treating patients. They treat over 70% of the total number of patients attending hospitals on a daily basis. As professionals, they also qualify to be managers and in charges of primary healthcare facilities across the country.
Training of Clinical Officers in Kenya started in 1928 with a hospital-based certificate program. The Diploma in Clinical Medicine course was later introduced in 1967, higher diploma (specialization) courses were introduced in the late 1970s, and the Bachelor’s degree course in 2003.
AIC Kijabe College of Health Sciences was allowed by the Clinical Officers Council to train Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery in 2015, and the 1st class was enrolled in September 2015 with 25 students. The program takes 3 years of training, after successful completion the graduates go through a 1-year internship and later licensure done by the Clinical Officers Council for practicing. At KCHS, we have higher diploma (specialization) courses for Clinical Officers which include Emergency and Critical Care in general patients and pediatrics, which includes Emergency Critical Care for Clinical Officers (ECCCO), Pediatric Emergency Critical Care for Clinical Officers (PECCCO), and Family Health for Clinical Officers (FHCO). The majority of our basic students come back and enroll in these courses, and they have grown to become great professionals both locally and globally, giving quality healthcare services and impacting lives to God's glory.
At KCHS, we are committed to training and mentoring innovative, committed, and competent Christian healthcare professionals and researchers to provide compassionate quality healthcare in Kenya and the world at large. "AIC Kijabe College of Health Science is a conducive place to learn holistically as a center of excellence in training following the steps of our Great Physician Jesus Christ."
